As you pass beneath the city gates, you are struck by the press of bodies. You have seen a large city before - Ghalle passed through Steel gap on her way here along the Red Way - but you are still momentarily taken aback. Not just the number of people, though, or even the loudness of the crowd, but their diversity. Dwarves and Elves and goblins and orcs and ursans and tigrans all pass alongside humans and eachother without much notice - save those who might harbor stealthy thoughts.
The great Central Avenue, wide enough for caravans to pass one another, stretches into the distance, all the way to the docks, perhaps. A number of businesses line the street here at the entrance, and street vendors hawking dubious wares from rickety carts or from under their cloak. The guards by the gates watch the crowd sharply; King Gomar is known for keeping the peace in Redpoint, and his guards are well-paid.
Would that be of interest? you wonder.
You start down the street, thinking of your next goal, now that you are here, warily watching those around you.

You get a strange feeling, like maybe you are being watched, but you see no one suspicious focused on you. You doublecheck your purse and equipment - all there. Your attention returns to the bustle around you, the passing crowd and merchants calling to those about them.
Ahead of you, you see a group of heavily armed and armored men and women leave a building with the sign of crossed swords above it, and begin leisurely walking among the crowd. They do not seem to be guardsmen, but rather...gladiators? They tun down a short street that leads toward the coliseum, and a few of the pressing crowd cheer them.
[You may investigate the building they departed from, follow them, or look for something else in the city, like food or ale, or whatever you want.
Also, make one more IQ check.]

Rolled a 15; invisiblecastle.com/roller/search/1191401/((Sorry GM had a horrendous couple of weeks and not checked for a bit)) Ghalle shakes her head-she must be imagining things. "Gladiators? Fighting for the entertainment of Fools-those men must be desparate indeed", she thinks to herself. Thirsty after her walking Ghalle wonders if the place the men emerged from is an inn. If so, it is probably as good as any, and so she decides to wander over and see if she can get something to eat and drink in there.

Ghalle enters the broad doorway beneath the crossed swords - it is not an inn or tavern at all. You find yourself in a wide, low-ceilinged room smelling of metal and leather. A few worn benches line the walls to either side, with a few warriors sitting on either one. Before you is a desk and an unammused human on the other side, seemingly shuffling and writing on reams of papers. behind the desk is an alcove, leading into a hallway from which loud voices sound.
The man looks up. "Well? What the hell do you want?"

"I think I may have made a mistake. I assumed this might be a place where warriors socialised but I'm guessing I got it completely wrong. What is this place?"

"Well, you are right. This is the Swordsmens Guild. We certainly socialize, to an extent, but we are more concerned with the well-being of mercenaries here in the city, as well as free gladiators."
He looks you over. "You have certainly swung a blade or two, and maybe you are new to the city." He stands up and extends his hand. "I am Rongo, Subguildmaster. Maybe you would be interested in joining our organization? Yearly dues are 25 silvers. We are advocates for free warriors, and also set them up with employment opportunities."

"Hmm, well I can afford that, I think" says Ghalle, extending her hand and returning the courtesy. Carefully she then counts out 25 silvers from her purse, and puts them down on the table.
"You're right too, " she says quietly, "I've seen a good deal of fighting. It is all I know, though I can scout a little too. But my funds are running low just now, so if you can put any work my way I'd be grateful."

Rongo takes the coins, and provides you with an emblem, of crossed swords over a shield. "This identifies you as a guildmember. I will also record your name in our rolls.
"As far as work, things are a bit slim now, but that is a constantly changing situation. Immediately, I can set you up with the Slavers' Guild for a guard job tonight, if you are inclined. If not, feel free to talk with some of the members in our lounge, as they pick up rumors faster than I can record actual details." He points down the hallway behind his desk.

" Hmm. I'll work with the Slavers if I have to, but I'd rather check out any other possibilities first if that's alright." Ghalle thanked him and wandered in to the lounge, looking round.
There were half a dozen different types in here, a couple looking fairly fresh faced but others looking as though they might have seen a thing or two.
A few looked across as she entered, no doubt appraising her, and one of these nodded and motioned her over.

"Do you remember me, Ghalle?" he says. Looking closer, indeed you do, though his face has been altered by the loss of an eye.
"'Tis old Bemmak, in the flesh - or what is left of it."
He had been a mercenary captain in the Divided Baronies, a particularly successful one that you had entertained thoughts about joining - until the Battle of Severed Rock. You had heard that his company was ambushed with no survivors. But this is definitely him - you both had shared a bottle of brandy after serving on the same side in a forgotten fight.
"So why are you in Redpoint? Opportunities dry up in the Baronies? Grow tired of killing? Ha! I doubt that.
"I have been here a month or so, now, making contacts. I might have a job for you, if you are looking for one. A potential patron has asked me to recover an object of art that was stolen from him...by a mage.
"I have asked a few others to assist me, but they have no taste for facing summoned gargoyles. But I remember your bravery.
"I will pay you 75 silvers for a night of dangerous work. Blood will be spilled. Are you interested?"

"I'm for it, I don't mind a little trouble for some quick ready cash. Is this a lone job or will I have any partners? And recovery means 'steal' I take it?" Ghalle grinned, showing her slightly longer canines.
"Tell me about this Mage."

[Sincere apologies for the delay.]
Bemmak smiles as you do. "A solo job, my friend. And...steal is such an ugly word. But if you insist on using it... then yes, from what I understand that would be accurate; though the mage stole it, as well.
"The mage? Zubo Straelgarr is a minor sorcerer. Lives in an inherited tenement in the Commons, just south of the Copper Plaza. On the top floor of a three or four story building.
"The object is a dragon statuette, made of some obsidian material and with green stones for eyes.
"I do not know where in his apartments it is located, so you will have to search. But I believe in your efficiency.
"Any other questions before I give you his address?"

Known associates? Bodyguards? Daily routine? Ideally he needs to be out.
I'll also need to look at the place and determine the best point of entry. Can I get in at roof level or do I have to stumble up throufh a wizards den?

"Associates? Can't say for certain, as I do not know this mage personally, only by reputation, and as I said he is considered minor, or at least obscure. I did hear that he does some work for the Slavers on occassion, and he has been known to purchase some fine wines and silks, usuaaly at the square - but I cannot confirnm eother of those.
"Bodygaurds - again, not trying to be obscure, but I cannot say. I imagine he has some hired swords, but none that have come through the armsmen's guild. And surely he can summon a creature or two.
"The routines of a sorcerer? Surely you jest, Ghalle.
"So you can see there is little precise information; that coupled with the inherent danger of facing a wizard is why there have been no takers.
"Given all of this, I can see why you would want to scout first. I remember you as being crafty. Very well.
"Go to the northwestern terminus of the Workers' Way, where you will find yourself in the Maul. Turn left until you are on a strange old lane that paralells the Workers' Way. You will come to the open area known as the Copper Plaza. Continue past this until you come to another plaza of some sort. You are very close to the city walls at this point, but you cannot see them over the dense buildings.
"Zubo Straelgarr's tenement will be on your right at this point, three or four stories tall and with demons or gargoyles on the upper corners.
"Scout it out, act if you feel like you can, or return and tell me you decline."
He slides you a shot of rather cheap vodka.
