Yes, indeed, these were some great questions. Some I have asked before but I guess I was misunderstood or that I misunderstood the answers. For example, I'm pretty sure I had asked before about IQ NA monsters and direct spells. The answer I received led me to believe that IQ NA monsters were immune to ALL direct spells. My bad. Dude, sorry I did not understood your question when asked earlier. Not sure why I didn't re-read what we had written in the rules then! Please feel free to ask, once again, anything else I missed! I am 100% certain I have forgotten some other great points you and others have raised, so we'll try to use this thread as a catalogue for the next iteration of rules. Man, no apology necessary. I know clarity of text/speech and reading comprehension are not my forte.

I am having a hard time understanding the purpose of grappling v. Strike. Is graplpling essentially the equivalent of being in melee or close combat? What's the advantage and purpose?

Do units block LOS?

If you attempt to strike and miss, can the defender counterattack as a reaction? I think the answer is no, they can only CA if hit.

Do you roll for initiative each round or only at the beginning of an encounter?

I am having a hard time understanding the purpose of grappling v. Strike. Is graplpling essentially the equivalent of being in melee or close combat? What's the advantage and purpose? On behalf of everyone here, welcome! For me, the purposes of Grappling are to (1) allow an attacker to leverage his ST in his attempts to "hit" a foe and (2) provide a way to hinder or "block" an opponent from going somewhere. Also, I don't allow "Unarmed" attacks unless the attacker and defender are in a "grappled" state. I may be alone on that last one, not sure. I usually think of grappling as two guys wielding daggers that are wrestling with each other to determine who gets stabbed, punched, kicked, or choked. If I'm wrong or if I missed something, hopefully someone else will chime in.

He "survived the attack" because the attack missed. I'm not sure if that was intended but I like it and it seems fair because the counterattacker loses the ability to attack (and move) on his next turn.

Do you roll for initiative each round or only at the beginning of an encounter? I think the intention is to roll initiative each round. I know that's what many do. However, I only roll initiative at the beginning of combat...because I'm lazy and weak-minded I guess

I don't understand this question. What are "units" and "LOS"? EDIT: My subconscious processed this while I watched TV for an hour. I think you are asking "Do characters block Line-of-sight?" Answer: Yes

Hey, atsgamer! Welcome to the boards!
As you can tell, our massive 7 page rule system is open to plenty of interpretation. We all tweak them as we want.
Here are a few answers/interpretations:
1. grapple vs. strike: Grappling is when you are in the same space/hex/square with your opponent. You are in close physical contact; wrestling, grabbing eachother with knive, jiu-jitsu, etc. Striking is when you are facing eachother but not in actual physical contact.
2. Units blocking LOS - by a strict reading of the rules, no. In older rules like Melee, which this is based on, the answer is Yes. Here you are free to make a situational judgement call, or make a universal rule as you see fit.
3. You can counterattack if you are attacked, not just successfully hit.
4. initiative is only rolled once, at the beginning of the encounter. A skill like Tactics allows you to switch the order at some point in the fight.
Hope these all make sense! Thanks for your questions!
Thanks, platimus, for stepping in for me!

My pleasure. I think you, Lord Inar, myself, and one or two others had a lengthy discussion about #4 Initiative on this board once upon a time. I could have sworn that everyone in that discussion but me rolled initiative every round. Nice to know I am following the rules in that regard. Maybe I'm not so lazy and weak-minded after all! Or maybe I am but not in the way that I thought!

I'd just use common sense in that a man can usually see what's behind another man. But can someone see past three rows of men? Probably not unless he had a height advantage. Can a man see what's on the south-side of an elephant from the north side, probably not so well. With that said, seeing an object is much different from getting a clear shot at someone with a projectile weapon.

Dark Vale mentions the Trade Skill of Bard and I'm puzzled ... does the Bard (with a successful roll) *create* a Karma point , so each buddy can take a dice re-roll or gain an XP ? Is that once a day ?

Dark Vale mentions the Trade Skill of Bard and I'm puzzled ... does the Bard (with a successful roll) *create* a Karma point , so each buddy can take a dice re-roll or gain an XP ? Is that once a day ? The rules that are freely available from darkcitygames.com, as I read them, state that you use the Bard skill to create Karma points once per adventure. The number created is equal to the Bard skill level. Example: Bart the Bard has Bard +3. At some point during an adventure (beginning or somewhere in the middle), Bart decides to use his Bard skill to sing an inspirational song of heroic deeds. If he passes 3/IQ(+3) (+3 because of his Bard skill), he creates 3 Karma points that he can distribute to his buddies as he desires. He cannot do this again until the current adventure is over (unless the adventure or GM says otherwise). If I've misread or misinterpreted somewhere hopefully someone will correct me.
