actually, i don't like that band really, i would like to hear any 'house rules' or adventure rules concerning poison and its use and effects. thanks!

Ok, I've recoverd sufficiently from the Poison (shudder) reference to breathe again... There has been a variety of poison references in the various adventures. One, like delivered from a spider if any bite damage penetrates armor, requires a character to make a ST check; failure means an additional d6 damage (no armor). The more poisonous a spider (or snake, etc.), the amount of additional damage increses. best not to get to carried away, as damage that armor does not stop accumulates very fast. A recent example in Emerald Twilight involves the fumes of the Lotus - If you are unable to make an IQ check, you are lost in horrific visions. There are two attempts, and if you fail the second your mind is lost forever. This is a reference to Queen of the Black Coast, when Conan is poisoned by the Black Lotus and has visons. If any character falls under the lotus in ET, they have similar visions... There are no hard and fast LAW rules for poison, though. As with much of our system, we leave a lot of leeway for adventure designers. Bret

cool. thanks for the reply. i started skimming through The Thing in the Lake last night...just looking for the dots/bullets that precede monster descriptions. i found the spider/poison rule you mentioned toward the front of that book. somewhere further into the book, i found another Spider/poison description that went something like this: if any spider-bite damage penetrates armor, the victim is poisoned. this means the victim will take 1 point of damage each turn until he successfully passes 3/ST or falls unconscious due to damage. i'm not too crazy about the first spider/poison rule (which is also the one you mentioned) for the reasons you mentioned. it really really hurts. basically, if you take damage...have some more damage! <evil laughter> i'm partial to the second spider/poison rule. it's not as harsh, gives the players some time to rectify the situation, plus it does not inevitably result in death (just unconsciousness), which i think is more similar to how real spider venom works on their prey. they like their meals alive but docile i remember finding a scorpion/poison rule in there too but i don't remember how that worked. in the case of something like a scorpion, i still like the 2nd spider/poison rule mentioned above with the caveat that it keeps going after unconsciousness and can result in death. also, there is a lot of tweak-ability in the 2nd spider/poison rule...their could be bonuses/penalties to the 3/ST check, the check could be made 4/ST, it could be a win-check against the poisonous creatures ST, there could be no check, the damage taken per turn could be varied, and there could be a limit on the amount of poison damage taken (no more than 5 (per bite/sting/etc.) so...i'm pretty settled on how i might handle poison damage inflicted on players. now i'm wondering if there are any precedents or house rules concerning players using poison (on their weapons, etc.) EDIT: oh, and sorry for the bad Poison puns. i just couldn't resist!

hehehe... Player to GM: "I will use Poison to decimate my enemies!" GM to Player: "And just _how_ do you plan to do that?" Player to GM: "I will sing Poison songs!" GM to Player: "10 of your foes drop to their knees wailing in agony. They are incapacitated as long as you sing. The other 10 must pass 5/DX when attacking due to the enormous amount of blood spilling from their ears onto the cold stone floor."
probably not a good example of players using poison! LOL

Wow...such hate for Poison...
As a hair band fan, I loved Unskinny Bop, Talk Dirty to Me, Look But Don't Touch, Swampjuice, Ride the Wind, and Life Loves a Trajedy. (Ok, I hated Every Rose Has It's Thorn).
Anyway, I like poisons that drop a character's stat (depending on the poison) on a failed ST save. So, something like Poison: 3/ST or -1 DX until healed.

gigglesticki like that idea. it's simple...but i think it needs a time-limit...like for the rest of the encounter or the rest of the day. otherwise, it seems like Disease to me. (oh, and that's funny. Every Rose Has Its Thorn is about the only one i liked. i wouldn't call myself a hair-band fan but i am sort of stuck in that era musically. i listen to megadeth, metallica, def leppard, kings x, rush, and (old) iron maiden most of the time.)

Well, I let people heal back 1 Stat point per stat per day. (So, if you're at -2 ST, -1 DX, and -2 IQ, tomorrow you;ll be -1 ST, -0 DX, and -1 IQ...without healing of course.) But that's in campaign play, in adventure play, it might be less.
And this also give the opportunity to offer herbs and alchemical solutions as loot for players with the right skills. (After killing the dreaded beardmunchkin, the heroes discover an alchemical lab. A player with Alchemy can pass a 3/IQ test to create 1d6 doses of antidote or alchemical fire. Antidote removes all poison effects. Alchemical Fire creates a 1 hex Fire for one encounter-and it can be thrown. Characters with Herbalism can pass a 4/IQ to create 1d6 antidotes or healing salves.) Etc...
Def Leppard is the band I've seen most in concert...big Leppard Fan. And Queen. And Sweet. And Rob Zombie. Evanescence. Jim Croce, etc.
But, even though I know rock bands have to do ballads to sell albums, the ballads always irk me a little. Hysteria is a great rocking album...then you hit (URGH!!!!) Love Bites.
And yeah, I adopted a lot of those poison rules from Pathfinder and some of the d20 3PP Herbalist books.

when you put it that way (healing one stat point per day and finding an alchemist's table full of ingredients), it sounds pretty good.
wasn't too crazy bout Love Bites myself. my first concert was Def Leppard (Hysteria) and Warrant (i think) i've never heard of Sweet

Well, I like to see lots of uses for the skill sets.
As for Sweet, they did Ballroom Blitz, Action, Love is Like Oxygen, Fox on the Run, Wig Wam Bam, and Teenage Rampage and others. Big Glam Rock Band like Slade or Queen.

Last time I saw Leppard was on the Hysteria tour, at Freedom Hall in Johnson City, Tenn. I loved half of that album, disliked the rest. It was awesome seeing Rick play the drums after that accident. Later, when Steve Clark died, I was pretty bummed. I like Viv Campbell, he is a solid replacement, but for some reason have just never gotten to see them again.

Although that robe with the fire on it might look cool on one of my cats... ah-ha! now we know the 'true origins' of the tigrans! legend tells that the first tigran rose from all fours thanks to a divine gift from the demi-god of fur, metal, and catnip, Po-Breteus. it is said that Po-Breteus gave the first tigran a cloak embroidered with fire that granted the ability to walk upright. however, unbeknownst to the first tigran, the cloak of fire reduced his superior cat-wit to the levels of mortal men. Also, within the lining of the cloak, it is written in fine print: May cause felines to jump, roll, and flail about as if on fire. Ask your veterinarian before using. LOL
