As one who geeked out heavily on Melee and Wizard at age 13-20, I just want to thank you for creating LAW. It's really sweet that you were able to condense it to 8 pages of rules. This simplicity is what I loved about the old microgames, and it was lost with TFT/GURPS. The dodging rule seems like a nice compromise between Melee, which didn't have it, and GURPS, where it seemed silly. In GURPS, two characters each with DX 3 could fight indefinitely and would never be able to hurt each other, nor could two characters each with DX 18. I even wrote a letter to Steve Jackson about this at one point, and got back a very nice reply in which he disagreed with me that the rule was bad. I like how you incorporated an interesting tactical element by forcing the dodging character not just to refrain from a chance at attacking but also to retreat.

Hey bcrowell,
Welcome to our boards!
Thank you very much for the compliments on the system, particularly the Dodge rule. I played a lot of GURPS in the '90's, so I know what you mean. We are happy with the Dodge rule, but it is funny how some people have missed it. When I have talked with some people who felt an adventure was too hard, and ask about the Dodge rule, many did not use it. As you point out, it is a critical tactical element, and it is figured into the playtesting of encounters.
Thanks again, and we hope to see you here often!
Bret
