Disney is to acquire Lucasfilms and is already planning a 2015 release of Star Wars, Episode 7.
thoughts? feelings? disturbance in the force?
i'm mixed. nothing they do can offend my love of Star Wars more than what Lucas himself has done with the prequels and the edited versions of the original trilogy.

I am torn as well. I agree that Lucas hosed everything with the prequels and re-edits, but I am sure new lows can be reached.
Interesting, because Lucas had decided against Episodes 7-9, given the tremendous amount of information post-Jedi with the Expanded Universe (wiki it if you are unfamiliar). I never really followed those later novels and other media, but this decision kinda nullifies it, as i doubt they will be following any of the later stuff as canon.
Definitely mixed feelings.

yeah, i'm pretty sure they will not be following 'canon'. lucas himself didn't follow his own canon established in the original trilogy. there are so many little things that don't jive. i actually enjoyed the pre-quels and jar jar binks. it's those little things that don't jive with the original trilogy that slightly annoy me. not following the canon of the novels may be a good thing to me. i read many of those novels that take place after ROTJ. after 3 trilogies and a few one-offs, it seemed a little ridiculous (and tiresome) that the same 3-4 people kept being thrust into positions to save the galaxy. of course, the 'fan-base' will not like this. one glimmer of hope (a new hope, you might say hehe) is that Disney might decide to release un-edited, original theatrical versions of the original trilogy on dvd and blu-ray that have been touched-up visually as well as the revised versions that lucas released. Disney will not be burdened with any sort of "creator's-pride" of original vision. They might release these original versions out of the truest, most dependable motivation of the mortal realm...to make money ha ha that made me come up with this little puny adage... Greed. Motivation you can bank on. LOL

I hear you. I am not tied up in the post-Jedi canon, but it there are a lot of fans who are. I don't know who any of the principal characters are, but I guess the kids of Leia and Han?
But Lucas has a history of not caring about his fans' thoughts, eh?
This could be good. I guess considering how the prequels came out, it is a positive that Lucas won't be involved in the sequel trilogy.

the first 3 or 4 trilogies that take place right after Jedi still centered around Luke, Leia, Han, Chewy, C3PO, R2D2, etc. it got old. i'm not sure how fans will react if they don't follow the 'canon' of those books. based on observation of other franchises, it will not be good. however, it might work if things aren't completely different and swallowed with the spoonful of sugar that is time.

wanted to elaborate on my riff about 'burden of creator's pride of original vision'...
nothing is wrong all of the time nor right all of the time. in the case of the original trilogy, pursuing that original vision that was held back by the technology or creative consultants of the time was wrong. for 20 years, people watched the original versions of the trilogy on TV and VHS. growing up, i'm pretty sure it was on a TV near me at least once a month. you don't change something like that...not without offering both versions. i would rather have seen re-makes. you let the old camp keep their version but open a door to something new *wink* LOL

I'm fine with it. After all, on another site someone commented that Disney is more hands-off when it is not their original property. Look at the Avengers movie (which I thoroughly enjoyed). No mouse ears there!
As to EU, they can roll back as much of it as they want! To me, it stopped feeling like Star Wars a while back.

i think those are my sentiments too, lord inar (although i'm not sure what 'EU' stands for)
i see it like this: Empire won more awards than any other SW film. from what i've read, it was the one where more people got their say in how things were done. with the Emperor Lucas out of the picture, natural selection will let the best ideas filter through the Galactic Senate.
i actually remember reading an interview with Lucas when ROTS came out that he was glad to finally be done with the prequels because he was beginning to see himself as a Vader or Palpatine with respect to SW.
of course, there might be a flopper movie but it is better to have 1 movie that totally sucks and 2-3 that are good than to have 4 movies that are riddled with bad ideas.

i think those are my sentiments too, lord inar (although i'm not sure what 'EU' stands for) European Union, of course. ;D Actually he means the Expanded Universe. I don't have anything invested in it, even though a lot of others seem to. The more I think about this, I don't have a problem, for precisely the reasons you guys have laid out.

LOL yeah, that's all i could i come up with (european union) and that didn't seem to fit but i figured it stood for something to do with the novels, etc. that took place after the OT (original trilogy )

hmmm...combine this topic with the recent Apple/Samsung patent battles and the total mess that is the current US patent system and i have observed another great pillar of wisdom... Good ideas make money. Great ideas start wildfires. They cannot be contained or controlled. this and other precious gems will be available in my soon to be released Holy Ebook that outlines the principles of Ewookiology and Ewookinetics. p.s. if you download the Holy Ebook and then delete it, you will die a horrible death at the hands of the Ewookie Jihadists
