I was rereading the Legends rules, gearing up for Bret's new game when I noticed the character generation description:
----- New characters start with ST8, DX8, IQ8, and eight discretionary points (32 total). Characters begin with four points of skills, two of which can be combat skills. Magic characters begin with four points of spells and skills. -----
Being the old TFT grognard that I am, I was thrown for a moment there.
So are you saying that any character skill costs 1 point, but if you take a weapon skill, you can't take a spell and vice versa?
(I ask because I want to know for my own edification, but I also want to update the Excel sheet)

Ah, I see what you are asking.
No, a mage character may still take skill in a weapon.
We should append "two of which can be combat skills" to the end of the paragraph.
Thanks for the catch!

OK, so to beat the dead horse, which builds are legal and what would the character be called? Hero or Mage?: 1 Spell, 3 weapon skills Mage?: 2 Spells, 2 weapon skills Mage?: 3 Spells, 1 weapon skill Mage?: 1 Spell, any 3 non-Weapon skills
Sorry for being so dense here!

No problem, Lord Inar!
The character decides at creation whether he is a mage or hero. A hero can't take any spells to begin with (he can get them later at double the xp cost). You can decide you are a mage and take all 4 skills if you want (odd, but acceptable under the rules).
Once you decide whether you are mage or hero, then you decide your skills/spells.
The last three examples would be good for a mage (since he can choose 4 spells and/or skills.
None of your examples would be good for a hero (since all four have spells).
The first example is not good for either (2 weapon skills max at creation).
Hope this clarifies things!

OK, so at character creation, skills cost the same as spells and you can mix and match, but after that it doubles for skills or spells depending on if you're a Hero or a Mage.
Also you declare what you are at character creation (Mage or Hero) even if you don't take any spells initially.
Got it!
