If you like the Skill Level 0 mechanic, that's great. I won't try to dissuade you from using it. For the uninitiated, the Skill Level 0 mechanic works like this: If you don't have the skill, you roll 4d6 instead of 3d6. I don't detest this mechanic but it seems to clash with whole idea of an Assisted Skill check, IMO. To me, an Assisted Skill check is a check where skill is not required. We have Required Skill checks for when a skill is required. If the skill is not required, it doesn't seem right to impose a penalty for not having it. Again, this is not an argument. These are my reasons for not preferring it.
I came up with an alternative that I do like. It is here for anyone else that feels as I do about the Skill Level 0 mechanic. It seems the greatest impetus for the Skill Level 0 mechanic is to prevent wizards from being better at IQ-based skills such as Tracker, Traps, etc. It is for me, anyway. Thus, leading to the following alternative.
All characters pay 10XP for skills. Wizards pay 10XP for spells while other characters pay 20XP. Wizards use an extra die on skill checks but not for spell-casting checks.
This maintains the notion that Wizards are not as good at mundane tasks and must put more XP into skills to gain their benefits.
ADDITION: The 10XP exceptions for Sorcerer's Tongue and Alchemist become die exceptions (3d6 instead of 4d6)
