The Legionnaire starts out with 2 x pilum (spears), 1 x gladius (short sword), 1 x Scutum (tower shield). If sword is sheathed, can 2 spears be held in one hand (for carrying)? If sword is in hand (& shield), are the spears carried on the back (with a strap)? Or does the Legionnaire decide to carry sword & shield or spears & shield?

Historically, a legionary would carry two pila into battle. One in his right hand ready to throw. The second would be in his left hand held up against his shield. The first image shows how he would do so. The second image is a velite holding extra javelins.
