Harzak (ahead looking for heat sources) Enyeto; Khanmahtt; Tembo (light source?) Reynaldo; Rrowullh; Mulherrin Shadout; Mundy (light source?) (I'm pretty good with the suggested order of march as is. Shadout already volunteered to carry torches/lanterns, so that keeps Mundy's hands free for his longbow. I expect Reynaldo will want to bend Mulherrin's ear for advice as we progress (Dwarves being underground experts and all), but the real question is how to carry a torch in the front rank? Especially since all 3 of those guys usually keep their left hand busy. I'd suggest that Enyeto & Khan take turns carrying the light, since our Healer is only wearing Cloth. Hate for the lightest armored dude to be the one holding the firebrand target for hidden archers. I'd also suggest that (as much as possible) the front rank guys use the group's torches, and the lanterns be used by Shadout and whoever he switches off with (perhaps Mulherrin?) That way if things get tough the torches can get dropped (or used to parry). Backjack, How about Enyeto go first and Khan switch out when we have to change torches?)

Enyeto can carry a torch in the front. Shadout will stay toward the rear with a lantern.

[OK, we go with that marching order and light source arrangement.]
Suddenly Harzak spies six heat sources ahead, swaying and closing rapidly - snacas! He calls out to the rest of the party, who do not yet see them.
[Stalker will do no good here - the tigrans cannot see what to attack until the snacas get within the light's limit - about 30 feet for the torch. The snacas WILL have initiative, when they appear at the light's edge (about 25 feet from the front rank if we go with the arrangement below).
I will assume the party closes up to Harzak, rather than let him stand alone, so a revised order might be:
Enyeto; Harzak; Tembo
Khan (torch), attacks with spear from this distance; Rrowullh, firing between front rank; Mundy, firing between front rank;
Reynaldo, excercising skills; Shadout (lantern); Mulherrin
Again, this is just an assumption, you guys have time to stand however you like.
Tomorrow (possibly later today if most are cool with this arrangement)will be Snaca Turn 1!]

Enyeto; Harzak; Tembo Khan (torch), attacks with spear from this distance; Rrowullh, firing between front rank; Mundy, firing between front rank; Reynaldo, excercising skills; Shadout (lantern); Mulherrin (I'm good with this arrangement, unless others have better suggestions. Questions though, when Enyeto hands the torch over to Khanmahtt, I'm assuming he loses the ability to use the shield effectively (it no longer absorbs 1 hit). But is his shield actually slung over his back? Or is he somehow managing to handle both the torch and shield in his left hand? Just want to get a feel for how encumbered he's feeling.)

Harzak sees the heat from the snacas sway near the edge of the light - then they stop, just beyond the range of the others' sight. Then the front three stop and kneel behind their shields, spears pointing out; while the other three lean tall behind them - and fire longbows toward the party! Harzak warns his new companions as arrows fly out of the darkness! [The front rank of snacas are 30 feet away, just beyond the characters' vision...] SNACA TURN 1 (While they see fine in darkness, there is a distortion by the flickering shadows they are firing toward; the snacas need an 11 rather than a 13 to hit.) Snaca D fires at Enyeto...and hits! for [8-2=]6 points of damage! invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3521633/Snaca E fires at Harzak...and misses! invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3521635/Snaca F fires at Tembo...and misses! invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3521638/Snacas A-C remain braced against the expected counterattack... [OK - perform your player turn 1 actions. If you close toward them, every Move of 1 is 5 feet. So if someine in the front rank has a move of 6, you can reach the front rank of snacas - but remember they have spears and will attack first. You also need the light-bearer to close enough to illuminate them. If you do decide to close and can reach them for an attack, go ahead and roll it. I will retroactively apply the snaca's spear strike first, to save time.]

"Crafty snakes!" Khanmahtt snarls when the arrow thuds into Enyeto, "Let's take the fight, and the firelight, to them. As fahr as you can go Master Hahrzahk, but do not charge upon their spears. Let's close the distance." Turning to Rrowullh and Mundy, "Shoot the archers when the torchlight reveals them." He then follows as the other three advance, "They'll shoot again soon friends, so 'get small'. Uh, no inzult to you Master Dwarff." Rrowullh peers down the nocked arrow's shaft into the dark distance, waiting for the torchlight to fall upon the snakes. "Mundy," Rrowullh murmurs to the Archer beside him, "if we can, let's shoot the same foe. Start from the left, yes? - for luck." Rrowullh launches an arrow as the archers come into view. 3d6-1;1d6 ¨ [6,2,4,-1] = (11) a hit unless we suffer minuses to hit due to the lighting 3d6-1;1d6 ¨ [2] = (2) piddly but a start invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3522331/ (I think Enyeto is the only one who has enough MA to actually charge the snacas this turn. And Charging a line of spears is a bad idea anyway. Khan's idea is to ease into them next turn rather than charge. Khanmahtt will advance just behind Tembo, Enyeto and Harzak, assuming they advance in a rough line together. If Enyeto chooses to not advance Khan will take his place in the front line. In any case, he will definitely advance at least as far as Harzak goes (MA 3?) to insure that the torch light extends past the snaca archers.)

I should clarify. Reynaldo is going to move up and activate the ring (I'll need to roll for that later unless Bret wants to, so we can keep moving) Tembo is going to move up and defend.

The force of the spear that struck Enyeto takes him to the ground. He extracts the spear and scrabbles toward the rear. Seeing the spear take out Enyeto, Shadout points his walking stick toward the advancing snakes and mutters words from a hellish language. As the words escape his lips, he punches the air with the hand holding his stick. invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3522639/ That is an 11. invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3522641/ That would be an 8 hits. Magic fist 3. Bret not sure the proximity of the snakes. He aimed at the front rank.

Reynaldo successfully activates the ring: 3d6 → [4,3,3] = (10) Activating ring invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3522989/Also at the beginning of next turn Reynaldo will steal initiative from the snacas 3d6 → [5,3,2] = (10) Steal Initiative invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3522990/ "Remember how they fought last time! Press the advantage, get past their spears! They'll be expecting us to be surprised and disorganized, but strike hard and strike fast!"

OK - if the front rank stands around Harzak, he does move 3, or 15 feet. The front rank of snaca spearman are 30 feet away. So the front rank will advance to 15 feet from that rank, and 20 feet from the archers. Since Khan took Enyeto's place in the front rank, this means all of them will be illuminated. Chris - you asked about Khan's torch'shield combo - sorry, forgot to answer. You can bear the shield while holding the torch, but not use it. That is, wielding the shield against an attack might put the torch in your hairy face - no the desired result. So you can hold the torch in preparation for dropping it if another light source catches up. But if you are hit by arrow or spear while holding it, only your armor stops damage. Klar, her kommisar? I will sort the first player turn out tomorrow morning, but we have: Khan (moved up to front rank), Harzak, and Tembo advancing 15 feet; Rrowullh and Mundy firing at the same archer; Reynaldo advancing (directly behind the front rank?); Shadout casting his Magic Fist-3 against the front rank of snacas (all will be illuminated by the advancing torch, and all three will be hit by the spell given their shoulder-to-shoulder proximity); Enyeto falling back to stand beside Shadout; Mulherrin? (Chris - tell your brother to step away from his bodacious wife and join the game! )

PLAYER TURN 1 The force of the arrow that struck Enyeto takes him to the ground. He extracts the arrow and scrabbles toward the rear. Harzak and Tembo move up 15 feet. Khan moves up 20 feet to the front rank. Rrowullh peers down the nocked arrow's shaft into the dark distance, waiting for the torchlight to fall upon the snakes. "Mundy," Rrowullh murmurs to the Archer beside him, "if we can, let's shoot the same foe. Start from the left, yes? - for luck." Rrowullh launches an arrow as the archers come into view. A hit for 2-1(scales)=1 hit on Snaca D. invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3522331/ Mundy follows Rrowullh's lead and...hits (10) the same snaca for (9-1=)8 hits! invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3528039/Reynaldo moves up behind the front rank and activates the Ring of Visual Diffusion. (2 Fatigue) Seeing the arrow take out Enyeto, Shadout points his walking stick toward the illuminated snakes and mutters words from a hellish language. As the words escape his lips, he punches the air with the hand holding his stick. Magic fist 3, aimed at the front rank. 8 hits-3(scales, lg shield)=5 hits to each of the front three snacas. Mulherrin frees himself of his gear and prepares a spell.

WOULD-BE SNACA TURN 2 The snakes...but wait!!!! Also at the beginning of next turn Reynaldo will steal initiative from the snacas 3d6 ¨ [5,3,2] = (10) Steal Initiative invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3522990/ "Remember how they fought last time! Press the advantage, get past their spears! They'll be expecting us to be surprised and disorganized, but strike hard and strike fast!" Reynaldo's skill has turned the tables and the Players go next... [OK - Player turn 2 actions guys. Post 'em!]
