The version of the LTS rules I have states that "Additionally, when a party acquires a plot word, each character gains one XP."
It seems to make more sense that this should happen when a plot word is discarded i.e. the sub-quest has been solved/completed?
What do you guys think?

i do see the logic in that. however, you have usually accomplished something already when you acquire the plotword and the sub-quest usually presents its own rewards.

Hey, Simon,
I can see your point. But two things:
1. Most plotwords are not discarded. Very few times are you told to discard a plotword, and ususally it is when it is superceded by another. So very few plotwords would lead to XP.
2. When you acquire a plotword, it is usually because you have arrived at a pivotal point, which opens up more of the adventure. Arriving at these points could be interpreted as their own reward, but giving out XP when plotwords are acquired seems like a good way to for the characters to "grow," that is they are benefitting tangibly (character-development-wise) from their choices and actions.
Anyway, that is why we do things this way. Hope it makes sense!

Thank you. That does make sense.
I think Dark Star Incident (the adventure I'm currently playing through) might be a slightly distorting lens as far as the full spectrum of DSG adventures is concerned...
My way would function fine with DSI as, so far, I have discarded 19 plot words (I'm including replacing as a type of discard) and I have a further 8 active ones, but I can see it might not function well with other adventures, if they don't use the plot word mechanism as much.
I can also see that there will be frequent cases when plot words are only resolved right at the end of an adventure, where character advancement will have limited impact.
