Just finished my 1st play through of Blood. To any that have been looking at the adventure, unsure if the West would appeal to you, have no fear. It is an enjoyable adventure; I recommend it. I think the setting is also something that can become a rich tapestry if the series is given room to grow.
My first run through ended too quick, to be honest. I had just spent nearly 2 weeks camping, trying to recover from a bout of smallpox that almost killed my entire party. Worried that time would run short before completing my goal, I set out again. I had no need to worry, as a few days later my adventure was over, the mystery solved.
I wanted the story to last longer, and I know I missed a lot....but isn't that the hallmark of a good adventure? I already have plans to send a new party out for another run through before moving on to something else.
A little feedback on the story. Not sure why there are so many Native tribes in such a small area, that seemed forced. It presents too many language options, and encounters seem one offs. Maybe it could have just been two tribes, in conflict, in the area. I think that could have been developed into a B story line with more interest against which to set the main plot.
Weapons: I never really saw a need to use more than pistols. Later, I picked up a few rifles. Now, pistols and rifles define the period, so hard to argue. I never found any explosives to toss about. Also, some of the combat skills I picked early I never had a chance to use. I designed one character with the idea he would charge, throwing a spear / lance, and then engage in hand to hand: a fierce and strong warrior. I never found a spear of any sort, so he would hide behind boulders and pop his pistol.
My tracker, recruited into the party for his survival and tracking skills, favored a bow. Took forever to find one, and the damage was half that of a pistol. He used one anyway. His skills were of little use. Tracking, riding, bow and fishing. Fishing got me one day of rations, once. His other skills played no part. So even though I tried to design a "rich" character, in game, he simply twanged a bow now and again. A bit of a let down.
Still, overall, an enjoyable time! It will get a second play, and the next adventure in the line will be purchased.
