how bout a 'rust armor' type spell? something like... Rust Armor...IQ12...2F*...Decreases the protection afforded by target's metal armor by 1 point for every 2F the caster spends. thoughts? feelings? premonitions?

I think this worth thinking over - we have Break Weapon, why not Rust Armor although it would be my choice to set the bar higher , like IQ 16 and costing 5F ... there's the problem of defining how it works really, does it also take down iron-reenforced doors or locked chests, what about locks or trap mechanisms ?

Interesting...I don't remember reading this thread before. 8 years ago!
The concept is pretty cool, although it should not be "rust" since that would not affect leather or cloth armor. How about Corrode Armor? It could scale, depending on how many points you put into it. For this, 12 IQ is too low, but I think 16 might be too high. Maybe 13 or 14 IQ, and it costs X points for every 1 point of Armor reduced. 2 points per would make it an expensive spell; 1 seems kinda light. Unless we went with a higher IQ.
(Typing out loud here - sorry.)
So how about IQ 14, reduced Armor rating by 1 for every 1 put into the spell?

This seems pretty potent!
It might be good to keep the "Rust" adjective in there, it seems like good practice to keep a contingency in there for powerful spells. Having it only affect the top tier armors could maybe help justify it being slightly overpowered.
If you know you're coming up against a powerful caster with Rust Armor and Break Weapon, gear up with Leather Armor, Wooden Shields, and stacks of javelins.
This would be a definite boss killer though! Being able to make a guy in Plate Armor susceptible to daggers and slings for 5FT seems very useful.

I haven't playtested this since we talked about it here. But reflecting on your points, you might be right. Raising the IQ might not be enough, though it will limit significantly who can cast it. 5 ST against the end boss, when your wizard has been draining his staff and FT, might still be expensive, though.
