foreword: not everything i post here is necessarily for me or something that i desire to have in the rules. sometimes i post things that are intended to bridge the desires of others. sometimes my bridges collapse and bury me under. penalties for lack of skill: for all skill checks except weapon skills, the adventure text/author is completely free to assign whatever penalty he wants for being non-skilled. for non-weapon skills, this presents very little burden to the adventure text. the situations precipitating non-weapon skill checks are too variable to put a hard-numbered penalty on them. the fact that sometimes they are assisted and sometimes required should make this easy to accept. weapons skills are ALWAYS assisted (unless, perhaps, it is a peculiar weapon). the penalties here can be easily delineated and logically applied to every situation. --- A character using a weapon with which he possess no skill incurs a DX penalty equal to the number of die the weapon uses for damage. --- examples: a character with no weapons skills... ...using a dagger will suffer -1 DX ...using a staff will suffer -1 DX ...using a cutlass will suffer -2 DX ...using a broadsword will suffer -2 DX ...using a battle axe will suffer -3 DX of course, he must first have the ST required to wield the weapon. this provides a measure of penalty for not having skill with a weapon but the penalty adjusts to the weapon being used instead of putting a severe, blanket penalty of -4 DX for all weapons.
