Hi. I'm Jeff, and I have a gaming addiction.
I've been wargaming since 1967 and first picked up Melee when it first got published. Prior to that, my brother and I had stumbled across Empire of the Petal Throne (that was our first RPG game, and boy, talk about a tough one to get into -- D&D actually seemed EASY when we got around to picking up the White Box version a few months later). I ran a few Melee scenarios for my gaming group, and when Wizard came out we were all excited by that. Then followed Death Test which we played to rags, and finally, after a VERY long time, ITL, Advanced Melee, Advanced Wizard and Tollenkar's Lair came out. We were in heaven and all of us actually preferred TFT to the more complex games. Of course, not too long after that Metagaming folded, and we went on to things like Call of Cthulhu along with many, many wargames, and then life intervened (as it is wont to do) and our gaming group broke up and went our separate ways in the mid-80's. I was fortunate enough to find small congenial groups to play games with occasionally over the years, but it has now been two decades since I last was in an actual RPG group.
Recently (last year) I stumbled onto Dark City Games and promptly purchased a couple, and have been extremely pleased and excited by them. I would have joined the forum earlier, but frankly hadn't even realized it existed until tonight. I hope that I'll be able to contribute in some meaningful way here as time goes on! But even if not, I expect to learn a ton of things from you all.

Over three years since the last post in this thread.... but I'm here now!
I'm Tony, have played The Fantasy Trip since I received Treasure of the Silver Dragon in '79 (didn't get Melee or Wizard until afterwards - my folks didn't realize it needed anything else). That started a long addiction with TFT.
I've known about Dark City Games for a few years, but have been on a gaming lull and haven't paid attention to anything non-D&D. Life, uh, finds a way, and I started dabbling in TFT again, and have started ordering DCG adventures (ordered Dark Vale a few weeks ago, just placed an order for Oracle's Breath and Raid on Cygnosa). I will still be using TFT with them (LAW seems great, but I'm old and set in my ways).
I will be teaching my 12-year-old daughter Melee and Wizard this weekend, and then having her venture through The Sorcerer's Manor and Orcs of the High Mountain once she gets a handle on the rules. Spent a considerable amount of time printing, cutting and gluing the wonderful stand-up minis from DCG, plus some SJ Cardboard Heroes and a few Precis Intermedia Disposable Heroes.
After some odd googling, I've realized that many people who play or have played TFT think in similar ways - I, too, have dabbled with Barbarian Prince and thought that the map would make a great setting for TFT (with suitable gates to Redpoint, Cretia, the Dragonadon world, and the Thorsz' city of Ardonirane, of course).
I'm trying to convince my current D&D group to dabble in TFT - the other adult in the group (it's mostly our kids) is a huge Steve Jackson fan, so I'm hoping he'll want to give it a try.

Welcome aboard. I don't spend as much time as I should here, but I can tell you this forum has some great ideas and thoughts on TFT, LAW, and roleplaying in general!
Good luck with getting your group into TFT; they sure won't regret it if they try it. And even if they don't, you still have the many great products from DCG to run through with anyone who is willing, or just by yourself!

Nuke, with regard to minis, are you also a miniature gamer? Wargame(board) player?

Wait 'till you see our wargaming release this Christmas. Kind of like "Squad-Leader for kids", but a LOT cheaper. And then next year it's integrated miniatures... Heh, heh, heh... (Evil laugh)

Squad Leader for kids? Isn't that like herding cats or a goat rodeo?

Nuke, with regard to minis, are you also a miniature gamer? Wargame(board) player? Araman, I apologize for the delay in responding to your post. I'm a Root Cause Analyst and have been up to my eyeballs with once since mid-June. They get especially fun when you start mixing in lawyers.... "Miniature Gamer" would be a bit ... strong. "Frustrated Miniatures Gamer" or "Reluctant Miniatures Collector" would be more accurate. Most of my miniatures (the 15mm ones at least) are for role playing, but I base them to support skirmish gaming as well. I have lots and lots of rules sets that I've examined over the years, but The Fantasy Trip/Dark City Games/Heroes and Otherworlds are my "Come Home to Mama" games, as is Tunnels and Trolls. I thoroughly enjoy nearly all of the non-historical Two Hour Wargames offerings (now, also Rebel Minis as THW has divested some to their games to them). I'm also interested in Steve Jackson Games' Ogre (board game and miniatures), Gruntz, Dirtside, Strike Legion, All Quiet on the Martian Front, various naval rules, Attack Vector: Tactical, Squadron Strike, Retro Raygun, War Rocket... But... ... I don't have room to set up and play most of them right now. My Mother-in-Law moved in with us, so we have her 3k sqft house stuffed into my garage and multiple storage units. The plan is to build a 1200 sqft detached garage on the property for storage and the yard equipment, but She Who Must Be Obeyed insists on going through Every. Damn. Box. In. The. Garage. One. At A. Time. before pulling the trigger on the detached garage. Personally, I feel if a box has been in the garage, unopened, for more than a year, we probably don't need it. I'd rather just haul it all away. But, I don't want to get smothered in my sleep.... Back on point: yes, I'm a miniatures gamer, but a stymied one at present. I paint miniatures to relax; playing with them is secondary at present. And, I'm woefully behind on posting on my blog what I've painted. I actually received a Bronze Medal at last year's ReaperCon for one of my 15mm miniatures. I was told by one of the judges words to the effect that 15mm miniatures were too small for decent painting. Hmmm. I asked him if he'd ever tried to paint the eyes on a 15mm miniature. You would have thought I was speaking a foreign language.... ;-)

I'm envious. My miniature painting days are in my rear-view mirror. My mother-in-law is 2k miles away, and her house is much smaller. I have the space and set-up for gaming (just built a 2 story 24'x48' detached garage with most of the upstairs a giant gaming/TV/living room. Unfortunately, I really don't have anyone local to play with. By the way, what is the significance/connection with the naval picture associated with your name on this site?

A belated Welcome to Nevandar!
I hope you have had a chance to enjoy the games! I am proud of Raid on Cygnosa, I think it is my best. I had some maps here, but they disappeared with the Photobucket thing...
Hope to see you around!

Hello all. Real name is Chris. I've been playing Melee and Wizard since 1988, found them in a hobby store in Kittery Maine when I was stationed at Pease AFB. I got into RPG's with Moldvay D&D but I hung onto those Metagaming books, at least until I got divorced. Played GURPS for a long time as well. I now live in the central valley in California and I am pretty sure it is the black hole of gaming; so I am loving these solo play adventures, plus it was really easy to teach my son Legends.
